As it grew stronger and as life evolved to a higher stage of awareness, both I h s a n and I t a ’i Dhil-Qurb a began to evolve and they started to play an ever-growing role in guiding the steps of life. Until life reached the stage of man, it moved with a slow and steady pace as if in a continued procession. But as it reached the stage where there is a large gap between animal life and the life of human beings, it seems to have taken a gigantic leap forward which completely transformed the conduct of life, as if a new creation was begotten. The adoption or rejection of the above principles by man brought about epoch-making changes, and trends developed in the history of man with far reaching effects. This is because sensitivity evolved gradually with the evolution of life and, having reached the stage of man, it suddenly started moving forward in leaps and bounds. This was so as the emphasis of evolution, after reaching the human stage, was not as much on his physical evolution as it was on his sensual and spiritual evolution.
