— Part I 54 into night and night into day, the alternation of different seasons from winter to summer, autumn to spring, from hot to cold and their specific effects on life upon earth, are factors which have a profound effect on our life supporting system. Balance in the Atmospheric Gases Each season has its own significance, whether welcome or not. Each of them is essential, jointly or separately, for maintaining the ecosystem on earth – not only in relation to the various forms of life but also by keeping balance in the elements. Why should there be a certain proportion of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air and why should there be the presence of rare gases? These are the questions drawing the ever-growing attention of the scientists to resolve and tackle. One thing for certain is that these proportions are not accidental, and a disturbance in the balance will disrupt the entire ecosystem of life. Even if the proportion of carbon dioxide were to rise by as much as 1% in the atmosphere, the effect could be devastating. What one reads in the newspapers about the greenhouse effect is little understood by the common reader. But readers become deeply concerned when the scientists inform them as to the real significance of this effect. If, for example, carbon dioxide were to rise by as much as 4- 5%, the planet earth would no longer be fit for hosting life. It is not just a question of the proportion of
