The Creation of the Universe 33 but it would suffice here to illustrate the point under discussion with reference to the universal law of gravity. According to this law, any two particles of matter in the universe are attracted to each other with a force whose magnitude is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. This mutual attraction is called gravitation. Without the perfect equation and balance in opposing forces, the universe could not have achieved its ultimate balance. This applies to the macro as well as the micro universe of molecules and atoms. Everything in orbit is made to stay in orbit as a result of perfectly balanced centripetal and centrifugal forces. A highly complex net of such forces binds the heavenly bodies and results in the maintenance of the universal stability. The Holy Quran refers to the same creative genius of God when it speaks of every heavenly body as being set in an elliptical orbital motion. This applies to all solar systems as well as to the galaxies and the groups of galaxies. Not a particle of nature is exempt from this all-embracing law. One observes the same orbital motions when one peeps into the exceedingly diminutive world of molecules and atoms. The orbital motion of a planet has to be perfectly balanced in relation to the counter forces of gravity, which constantly pull it inwards.
