27 2 The Creation of the Universe We will now see how all constituent parts of the universe work according to the principles mentioned in the following verse of the Holy Quran: And the heaven He has raised high and set up the measure, that you may not exceed the measure. So weigh all things with justice and fall not short of the measure. (S u rah al-Ra h m a n; Ch. 55: Vs. 8-10) In these verses, God says that He has created the heavens high, pointing out its loftiness as well as its grandeur. Both of these characteristics depend totally upon balance; this celestial universe is not only made on the principle of justice but also works as a touchstone for it. The word M i z a n ( ) includes the principles as well as the instruments by which justice can be measured. The message for man implied in this word is that if one were to cast a glance at the heavens and whatever they contain as created by God, one would find therein absolute balance and nothing but perfect symmetry.
