179 11 Islamic Jihad Misunderstood Having examined the clear and unequivocal Islamic pronouncements as regards freedom of conscience, we must now resolve the apparent conflict between this and the teachings of Islamic Jihad. What kind of justice would it be if, on the one hand freedom of conscience is upheld unconditionally, while on the other, Muslims are required to take up the sword in the name of what they consider to be right, as against the other religions and the peoples of the world? To understand this issue we bring the readers’ attention to the following verse of the Quran: Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged ⎯ and Allah indeed has the power to help them ⎯ Those who have been driven out from their homes unjustly only because they said, 'Our Lord is Allah'–– –And if Allah did not repel some men by means of
