One-eighth of the size of the kidney would be sufficient to do the routine work and it would require no extra cushioning in case of accidental disease or due to the excesses of gourmet eaters. It is a fascinating display of I h s a n and I t a’ i Dhil-Qurb a together. If there is a constant disregard towards the dictates of justice and towards the beneficence of God and if man were to lose seven parts out of eight parts of his kidney, still he could survive as a healthy person, provided he learns his lesson and returns to a normal balanced diet. Thus we see that in most situations absolute justice and benevolence can flourish together without one interfering with the other. However, if there is a danger of a clash occurring between the two, then benevolence is not permitted to play a role and absolute justice must prevail especially if the coming into play of benevolence requires the sacrifice of justice i. e. if favours can only be shown at the cost of justice. As long as benevolence can coexist with justice it will be permitted to survive and function. Although benevolence is a thing of a higher order, justice is more fundamental and fundamentals are never sacrificed on the altar of the extra and optional.
