— Part I 72 He did at every stage and in every form in which He compounded and fashioned you. (S u rah al-Infi ta r; Ch. 82: Vs. 7-9) Let us now re-examine the above verse at greater length. God seems to address man as such: 'O Man! on what grounds are you behaving so arrogantly towards your Lord who created you? If it is beyond you to comprehend the grandeur and limitless wonder of the universe, you can at least delve into your own being and wonder at the perfect balance with which God has created you i. e. the universe within yourself. Yet you have the audacity to question the existence of God. Again, we reiterate the above, that it is He who created you, then fashioned you, then proportioned you. ' One of the verses just referred to, though revealed fourteen hundred years ago, seems to have been revealed in the contemporary air of advanced knowledge to which we belong. At the time of the revelation of the Holy Quran, there was no concept of man having passed through embryonic stages; so many different stages, so many shapes and organic proportions reminiscent of the history of evolution. Verse 9 of S u rah al-Infi ta r quoted above simply could not have been a product of the human mind of that age. It reminds man that he has been passing through so many different shapes and forms before his birth, going through innumerable changes requiring different organic proportions. One wonders what
