— Part III 308 And do you make the denial thereof your means of livelihood? (S u rah al-W a qi‘ah; Ch. 56: V. 83) By denial, this verse refers to the denial of the Reformers of the time. Thus, the breaking of covenants is no ordinary crime. It is a progressively fatal disease of the spirit. Punishment for the Breaking of the Covenant Binding on the Entire People In the following verse, the Holy Quran speaks of a punishment to the whole people as a result of their breaking their covenant: So, because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them, and have hardened their hearts. They pervert the words from their proper places and have forgotten a good part of that with which they were exhorted. And you will not cease to discover treachery on their part, except in a few of them. So pardon them
